Key takeaways
- Colombia has two public holidays in December 2026 and two in January 2027, and the Monday holiday creates a long weekend.
- Clinics and their outside dental labs may close or run reduced hours between Christmas and early January, so ask for the exact dates in writing.
- Crowns and bridges depend on lab turnaround, which is the step most likely to slip during the holiday break.
- Build your schedule backward from the lab and the surgeon's availability, not from the cheapest flight.
Many people who work in the US or Canada have their longest stretch of time off between Christmas and New Year. That makes December and January an obvious window for dental work in Medellín. The question is whether the clinic, the dental lab and the airlines are operating on the same calendar you are.
They often are not. Colombia observes public holidays that North American employers do not, many businesses slow down between Christmas and early January, and holiday flights and lodging fill early. None of this makes holiday treatment a bad idea. It means the schedule needs to be confirmed line by line, the same way you would read a quote.
This guide covers the official holidays in the window, the closures to ask about, why lab work is the step most likely to slip, and how to plan a multi-visit case around all of it.
The Colombian public holidays in the window
Colombia's public holidays (festivos) are set by law. Under Ley 51 of 1983, often called the Ley Emiliani, several holidays move to the following Monday to create long weekends, while others, including Christmas, stay on their calendar date, according to Radio Nacional de Colombia.
For the December 2026 to January 2027 window, the published dates are:
| Holiday | Date | Day of week | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inmaculada Concepción | December 8, 2026 | Tuesday | Fixed date |
| Navidad (Christmas) | December 25, 2026 | Friday | Fixed date, creates a three-day weekend |
| Año Nuevo (New Year's Day) | January 1, 2027 | Friday | Fixed date, creates a three-day weekend |
| Día de los Reyes Magos | January 11, 2027 | Monday | Moved to Monday under the Emiliani law |
The December dates come from Portafolio and the 2027 dates from Radio Nacional (both linked in Sources). Before you book, confirm them again against a current Colombian calendar, since your trip dates are what matter.
What the festivos mean for an appointment
- Clinics may be closed on the holiday itself. Some private clinics open on festivos, many do not.
- The day before and after can be thin. Staff take bridge days, and labs may not run deliveries.
- The Monday holiday in January falls after many visitors have already flown home. If your second visit lands that week, ask whether the clinic is open that Monday.
Closures to ask about in writing
Official holidays are only part of the picture. Many businesses in Colombia slow down or close for part of the period between Christmas and early January, and dental clinics and labs are no exception. The only reliable way to know is to ask the specific clinic.
Send these questions before you pay a deposit:
- Which dates is the clinic fully closed between mid-December and mid-January?
- Which dates is it open with reduced staff or reduced hours?
- Is the surgeon or prosthodontist named on your treatment plan working on your appointment dates, or on vacation?
- Does the clinic use an outside dental lab, an in-house lab, or both? What are the lab's closure dates?
- If something fails while you are still in Medellín (a temporary comes loose, a suture issue, swelling), who answers the phone on December 24, 25, 31 and January 1?
Ask for the answers by email or in the written treatment plan. A verbal "we're open" in October is not a schedule.
Why lab turnaround is the weak link
Crowns, bridges, veneers and the final teeth on a full-arch case are usually made by a dental lab, either in the clinic or at a separate business. The dentist prepares the teeth or takes impressions or scans, and the lab fabricates the restoration. If the lab closes for a week, your case waits a week.
This matters because most quotes show the clinical steps clearly and the lab steps vaguely. When you read a holiday quote, look for these lines:
- Lab name or type: in-house or outside lab
- Lab turnaround per step: how many business days between impression and try-in, and between try-in and final cementation
- Material: zirconia, e.max, PFM, acrylic. Different materials and processes can mean different lab times
- Remakes: if a crown does not fit at try-in, how long does a remake take, and is it included in the price
Ask the clinic to state its own turnaround figures in writing, and ask whether those figures still apply over the holidays. If the answer is "it depends," ask what it depends on.

Flights and lodging during peak season
December and early January are busy travel periods in Colombia, both for international visitors and for Colombians traveling home or on vacation. Flights and lodging near the holidays tend to book up earlier and cost more than in quieter months.
Practical points for a dental trip:
- Book refundable or changeable fares when you can. A lab delay or a healing issue can push a visit by days.
- Choose lodging with flexible cancellation for the last few nights of your stay, in case the clinic needs to move your final appointment.
- Stay near the clinic. Holiday traffic and events can make cross-town trips slower. Short trips to appointments are easier on recovery days.
- Check the arrival airport. Medellín's main international airport, José María Córdova, is in Rionegro, about 29 km east of the city, according to Wikipedia. Allow time for the transfer, especially on a day you have an appointment.
Scheduling a multi-visit case across the holidays
The hardest cases to schedule over the holidays are the ones with healing time between visits: extractions with delayed implants, bone grafts, and full-arch cases that go from temporary teeth to final teeth. Our trip count calculator explains how to estimate how many visits your plan needs.
A sequence that tends to work better around the holidays:
- Ask for the full treatment timeline first. Every visit, every lab step, and the minimum healing time between them, in writing.
- Mark the closures on the same calendar. Festivos, clinic closure dates, lab closure dates and the surgeon's time off.
- Put the surgical visit early in December or after the January holidays when possible, so you have open business days afterward for follow-up.
- Avoid scheduling a final cementation on the last day before your flight. Leave at least one open business day for adjustments.
- Get the post-op contact plan in writing, including who covers the holiday dates.
If your case has one visit
Single-visit work, such as a cleaning, an evaluation with a CBCT scan, or simple fillings, is easier to fit around holidays. Even so, confirm the appointment date against the closure list. A one-visit evaluation in December is a reasonable way to get a firm written plan for a larger case later.
If your case has two or more visits
Ask the clinic directly whether starting before the holidays and finishing after them makes sense for your specific plan. A licensed dentist who has examined your records is the right person to answer that. Some steps can wait. Others, such as leaving prepared teeth in temporaries for an extended period, may not be ideal.
Questions that separate a real holiday schedule from a vague one
Use this table when comparing two clinics that both say they can see you in December.
| Question | Clear answer looks like | Vague answer looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Closure dates | Specific dates in writing | "We close a few days" |
| Lab turnaround | Business days per step, holiday exceptions noted | "The lab is fast" |
| Surgeon availability | Named provider confirmed for your dates | "Our team will see you" |
| Emergency coverage | Name or role and phone or WhatsApp number for holiday dates | "Just message us" |
| Remake timing | Days for a remake and whether it's included | Not addressed |
If one clinic answers all five and the other answers two, the difference matters more than a small difference in price.
Before you pay a holiday deposit
Read the deposit terms closely. Ask whether the deposit is refundable or transferable if the clinic changes your dates because of a closure or lab delay, and whether it is refundable if you cancel. Compare what you would actually pay, including card and currency costs, and run your totals through the savings calculator once you have written quotes.
A holiday trip can work well if the clinic is open, the lab is working, and the timeline has some slack. The goal is to find that out before you book a non-refundable flight.

Common questions
Are dental clinics in Medellín open on Christmas and New Year's Day?
Many are not, and policies vary by clinic. Ask each clinic for its exact closure dates in writing, including the days around December 25 and January 1.
Will my crowns take longer to make in late December?
They can, if the dental lab closes or runs reduced hours. Ask the clinic for the lab's turnaround per step and whether it changes over the holidays.
Is the Reyes Magos holiday always on January 6?
No. In 2027 it is observed on Monday, January 11, because the Ley Emiliani moves it to the following Monday. Check the current calendar for any other year.
Should I start a full-arch case in December and finish in January?
That depends on your treatment plan, healing needs and the clinic's schedule. Ask the treating dentist, after they've reviewed your records and CBCT, whether splitting the case across the holidays is appropriate for you.
What is the safest way to book flights for holiday dental work?
Choose changeable or refundable fares and flexible lodging when possible, and leave at least one open business day before your return flight for adjustments.
